Books, Videos & DVD’s

The research behind Intellectual Character is the basis for much of my current work on creating cultures of thinking in classrooms and nurturing students thinking dispositions.  In the book, I lay out the argument for why schools need to focus on developing students intellectual character and then look at classrooms where teachers effectively do so.  Click on the links to read reviews of Intellectual Character from Education Review  and the Christian Science Monitor.

Before becoming a researcher at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, I taught mathematics at both the middle and elementary school levels.  These books are some of my ideas for teachers about how to teach mathematics in a way that focuses on understanding.  Some are a bit hard to find in print, but I believe all are available from the Project Zero Bookstore.

As the Principal Investigator and Director of the Creative Classroom Project, I produced a number of videos on creativity in the classroom.  Disney Learning Partnership distributed these for a number of year, but has stopped production.  While the videos are no longer readily available, you can download a copy of the book in PDF format by clicking the images below.

I also produced the Visible Thinking DVD that features teachers at the International School of Amsterdam using a variety of Thinking Routines.

Making Thinking Visible, written with Mark Church and Karin Morrison is available through Jossey-Bass. It can be ordered on Amazon. If you get a copy. See the Table of Contents Here. You can read an excerpt from the book Here.

Making Thinking Visible has a Facebook page you can join as well. “Like” the page to get updates of events and new findings and to engage in discussion and sharing with other educators around the world. I’ll be posting questions about once a week to encourage this.Books_&_Videos_files/MTV_%20TOC.docBooks_&_Videos_files/Ch1_Unpacking%20Thinking_Reprint.pdfshapeimage_4_link_0shapeimage_4_link_1

Creating Cultures of Thinking: The 8 Forces We Must Master to Truly Transform Our Schools is now out! Each chapter of the book explores one of the 8 cultural forces that are the leverage points for shaping group culture. Wonderful teachers from all over the world with whom I have worked on the development of Cultures of Thinking invited me into their classrooms to witness their extraordinary teaching. These cases studies provide vivid examples from which others can learn. You can download a preview of Chapter 1: The Purpose and Promise of Schools HERE.
